Bio of Dr. Ariel Hollinshead

Color photo head shot of Ariel Hollinshead.Dr. Ariel Hollinshead is an oncologist, educator, and cancer researcher, par excellent. She completed her MA in 1955, PhD in 1957, MD in 1977 and is currently Professor Emerita from The George Washington University, which means she will always be a part of GWU, not just a retired professor. Her honors and accomplishment are phenomenal; 280 articles published on active immunotherapy and immuno-chemotherapy of cancer and virus diseases. Her scientific discoveries range from use of purine, pyrimidine and sulfur-containing analogues for effective viral disease treatment to separation identification of active peptides from cell membranes and first proof of their efficacy in tumor prevention in animals and man. Clinical trials were conducted for nineteen forms of cancer using these epitopes for monitoring tumor progression, as well as, providing better polyvalent future therapies.

One of the many outstanding awards includes the USA Bicentennial Medical Women of the Year from the Joint Board of American Medical Colleges in 1976. The same year she received the Medical Women of the Year by the Marion Spencer Fay National Board. In 1980, she received the Star of Europe, an honor chosen by Ministers of Health from Germany, Italy and England. In 1985 and 1996, she received the Distinguished Scientist Award and subsequently, the Distinguished Scientist Emeritus Award, both from the Nat. Soc. Experimental Biology and Medicine for an "Outstanding Career in Teaching and Research in Medicine".

Ariel's support of GWIS included Omicron leadership as chapter president in 1968-69 and National President in 1985-86, plus many committees and numerous extramural activities in support of women scientists. For example, to celebrate the 65th GWIS Anniversary celebration in 1986, she invited and ultimately welcomed 17 Past National Presidents, six Honorary GWIS women scientists, and three GWIS Meritorious Service Awardees to the National Conference in Philadelphia. In addition, she has been the National Liaison Officer to Washington D.C. and has kept GWIS apprised of the activities that were pertinent to women in science.

Dr. Hollinshead and her retired husband, Chief Law Judge for the Federal Trade Commission, Montgomery K. Hyun, enjoy their three grandchildren and their two sons and spouses.
