Bio
of Dr. Robin Woo
Dr.
Robin Woo is a Senior Policy Analyst for the Office of Constituent
Operations in the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition at the
US Food and Drug Administration where she is responsible for coordinating
international technical assistance. She is an active member of the
Association of Food and Drug Officials' (AFDO) Subcommittee on Food
Export Certificates, International and Government Relations Committee.
Before joining the FDA, Dr. Woo was Director of the Ceres
Forum, a neutral platform for discussion of complex issues in food
and nutrition policy for government, industry, academia and consumer
groups. From 1992-2001, as Research Assistant Professor and later Associate
Professor at Georgetown University's Public Policy Institute, Dr. Woo
mentored graduate students and taught seminars on "Biotechnology and
Public Policy" and on food safety and nutrition topics.
On sabbatical in 2001 at the Inter-American Institute
for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) in Costa Rica, she created an
innovative training series on Executive Leadership in Food Safety for
the developing world, beginning with Latin America. Dr. Woo has been
deeply involved in enhancing science communication for over 20 years,
previously serving as Director of Meetings for the American Association
for the Advancement of Science and managing program development for
the UCLA Symposia in Molecular and Cellular Biology, which annually
attracted 10,000 scientists to the ski slopes.
A member of USDA's former Agricultural Biotechnology
Research Advisory Committee, Dr. Woo currently serves on the Board
of Directors of the Graduate Women in Science, is a Fellow of the American
Association for the Advancement of Science, and a member of Sigma Xi.
She received a BS in anthropology and PhD in developmental biology
from the University of Pennsylvania. Her UCLA postdoctoral research
focused on cellular biochemistry; and she received an Executive MBA
from UCLA. Dr. Woo has lectured extensively in the effort to increase
public understanding of agricultural biotechnology and has authored
many conference proceedings and research papers on diverse topics--including
food safety, growth factors, insect physiology, plant ecology, and
pediatric dietary policy.
