Overview: Join us in Iowa City to celebrate and explore Diverse Science! All business meetings and conference activities will take place at the Iowa Memorial Union (IMU), located at 125 N Madison St., Iowa City, IA 52245.

On Friday the GWIS National Council members will meet for the annual business meeting. All are welcome to join this meeting to learn more about GWIS leadership! Friday night we will gather for a welcome and networking dinner at a great local restaurant, El Bandito’s. This restaurant is just a few blocks from the Iowa Memorial Union, so it’s an easy walk to get there.

On Saturday we will host the Grand Chapter meeting. Everyone is welcome, and Chapter Presidents and National Liaisons are especially encouraged to attend.

For individuals not attending the Grand Chapter meeting on Saturday, we have all sorts of activities planned! We will start the morning by hosting an outreach event for local children in downtown Iowa City. Members of the Iowa City GWIS chapter will volunteer their time to lead fun science demonstrations for the kids. Interested in outreach? Everyone is welcome to join this activity, no registration needed!

Our “Diverse Science” conference will begin at 1pm in the 2nd floor ballroom at the IMU with a panel titled “What are they looking for? Skills for Diverse Careers in Science”. At 2:30 we will host a talk and discussion featuring Dr. Donna Nelson (who recently received the GWIS Honorary Membership Award for her inspiring career in science) about the Nelson Diversity Surveys, a monumental collection of datasets through which Dr. Nelson evaluated diversity among professors at research universities by quantifying the representation of women and minorities. After a short break, we are thrilled to also get to host a conversation with Dr. Nelson about her experiences being a science advisor for the hit show Breaking Bad.

After the conversation, we will have a poster session from 4:30-6:00 pm, with awards for the top two posters. The poster session is open to all who would like to share their science, though the competition will be limited to undergraduates, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers. Submit an abstract here ( before June 1st and share your science!

We will conclude the conference Saturday night with dinner and a keynote presentation by our invited speaker, Dr. Corrie Moreau, director and associate curator at the Field Museum of Natural History. We are excited to hear about her research and her interest in science education and outreach!

The business meetings and conference will take place at the Iowa Memorial Union (IMU), located at 125 N Madison St., Iowa City, IA 52245.

Iowa City is in driving distance from many major cities (Chicago, St. Louis, Minneapolis, Madison). Otherwise, the Eastern Iowa Airport (CID) is located 25 minutes from Iowa City, and the Quad Cities Airport (MLI) is located in Moline, IL, about 50 minutes away. Sometimes the MLI has cheaper fares, though transportation to Iowa City is trickier to figure out. To get to Iowa City from the CID airport, the airport offers a shuttle (around $35), taxis and rental cars are available, or let us know when you’ll be getting in and we can try to arrange a carpool!

We've reserved a block of rooms at the Iowa House Hotel, which is conveniently in the same building as the conference. Book a room online or by phone and use code 3595 for our special discount of $95 per night. Interested in finding a roommate to split the room? Email!

The $95 room rate includes taxes and fees, parking, wifi, continental

breakfast, and access to the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center (which is pretty awesome and only 3 blocks away!). Check in begins at 3:00 p.m. and check out is at 11:00 a.m. Rooms will be available until May 23rd, after which they will be released to the public, so book yours before May 23rd!

Iowa House Hotel provides complimentary parking for guests in the IMU Parking Ramp or North Parking Ramp. Guests are responsible for paying the meter if parked in metered spaces (meters are only free on Sunday, and there aren’t very many of them near the IMU). Conference attendees not staying at the Iowa House will not receive complimentary parking through the hotel, but may pay to park in the IMU Parking Ramp or North Parking Ramp. There are other parking ramps downtown or free street parking can be found but would require some walking. Uber, Lyft and taxis are available in Iowa City, as well as a reliable bus system. If you are staying at the IMU, you won’t need transportation for any activities, as all are in walking distance.

Many of your meals will be provided if you attend the business meetings. Otherwise there are many great places to eat within walking distance of the IMU. Downtown Iowa City is just up the hill from the IMU and has local restaurants for either dinner or a quick lunch, as well as a few classic chain restaurants (Subway, Jimmy John’s, Chipotle, Pancheros). Our personal favorites are Nodo (amazing sandwiches and salads), Clinton Street Social Club (perhaps for Thursday dinner when you arrive), Short’s, and Dumpling Darling (not a ton of seating but the dumplings are so good!).
