GWIS 2020 National Conference Postponed
Due to the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Annual Graduate Women in Science (GWIS) Conference scheduled for June 11-13, 2020 has been postponed to Summer of 2021.
Although the conference has been cancelled, we hope that you will still join us for our Q4 National Council Meeting and Grand Chapter Meetings in June 2020, which will be held online via UberConference. More information regarding these meetings will be sent out soon.
Our thoughts and concerns are with those affected by this pandemic around the world. Please take care of yourselves and each other. If you have any questions or concerns, please email GWIS President Gina Moreno (
Virtual Conversations - Careers as Medical Liaison and Medical Writers

For May, we will be highlighting another set of post-PhD careers. We’ll be talking with two medical science liaisons and a medical writer to discuss their career paths, their day-to-day responsibilities, and their advice for their field. Medical science liaisons and medical writers are healthcare professionals who can be employed by pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical device, and managed care companies. They are often involved in activities related to clinical trials and they work to effectively and clearly communicate complex scientific knowledge. These fields are rapidly growing and are fantastic options for PhD who want to use their expertise outside the lab/away from the bench.

Tara Burns, PhD, Associate Medical Science Liaison at Sirtex Medical Limited

Brenna Beckelman, PhD, Medical Writer III at Trilogy Writing and Consulting

Britta Nelson, PhD, Medical Science Liaison in women’s health at Bayer

New on GWIS Podcasts

Check out our new GWIS Podcast series in which we recently featured a discussion with GWIS member, Dr. Shu Li. In the spirit of World Entrepreneurship Day last month, Dr. Li shared her adventurous journey from being a graduate student and plant biologist to an entrepreneur within the California biotech community.  She is the co-founder of two successful startups, Alpine Roads and Petri Bio.

Research Funding Opportunities During the COVID-19 Crisis
The American Psychological Association has compiled a list of opportunities for grants related to COVID-19 and stress.
The NSA is fast-tracking funding for COVID-19 response research. Researchers can use Rapid Response Research grants from the National Science Foundation to quickly launch studies of unexpected or traumatic events.
GWIS members can post open positions in our career center for free! Contact Jennifer Riggs in our GWIS office for more details.
Gender Pay Gap in Industrial and Organizational Psychology
The 2020 report from the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology provides insights into this area, including noting that the gender wage gap widened. Female I-O's earn approximately 87 cents per dollar earned by male I-O's.

Virtual platforms give GWIS Chapter members the opportunity to keep learning.
The CDC’s guidelines on social distancing, quarantine, and isolation are currently our best line of defense against COVID-19, but we can’t deny that they present obstacles which complicate once-normal interactions. In lieu of physical classes, many programs have gone virtual – including the GWIS Madison Chapter, whose members have been attending online BioRender “Work from Home” webinars. BioRender is a user-friendly, versatile illustration tool intended to simplify the process of designing graphics for publication and everyday use in research. In 1-hour sessions, students get tips on designing figures, proper labeling and numbering, making a figure aesthetically appealing, and more. BioRender can be found online and the basic plan is free to design figures with icons, templates, and a customized protein builder.
Using science-based skills to advance in a new field
Today's workforce requires agility and flexibility in finding new places to apply learned skills. Eastern South Dakota Chapter member Megan Quast changed career directions and found her training in scientific research translated well to the banking industry. Look for more details in the upcoming issue of GWIS Empower!
