Chapter News

Dr. Patricia Silveyra (Hershey Chapter) received the Dale J. Benos Early Career Professional Service Award. This award honors members of the American Physiology Society who engage and further the societal-level goals of physiology. Congratulations Dr. Silveyra! Dr. Silveyra was featured in our February 2017 GWIS Lead issue and led our February 2017 webinar on Diversity.
Over the summer, Twin Cities, MN Chapter partnered with a team of instructors made up of UMN scientists and trainees to mentor elementary students in a "Race to the Derby" summer science camp. The leaders trained students in experiments in physics and engineering, while learning about mass and energy, gravity, balance friction, aerodynamics, and how to use the scientific method. In the last four sessions, the kids built their own derby cars and tested them in an exciting derby race!
Eastern North Carolina Chapter kicked off the semester by a fun socializing at Mother Earth Brewery, which is known by the locals as a green-conscious craft brewery with solar-powered taproom, tours and a lively, drinks-only beer garden. Everyone had a wonderful time drinking and bonding.

Eastern South Dakota chapter successfully hosted an on-site social event in August to connect women of science together.  Besides networking, everyone learned a lot about the USD’s Graduate Education and Applied Research (GEAR) Center which fosters collaboration between the University of South Dakota and biotech companies focused on research and commercialization. Participants were also invited to share their research by poster presentation.
