Hartley Corporation Fellowship

Hartley Corporation Fellowship

The Hartley Corporation is a small private foundation established in the 1930’s by (Mrs.) Helen Hartley Jenkins, Helen Downs Haller’s great-grandmother. The IRS requires that foundations of its sort must distribute at least 5% of their assets annually. (If the invested funds yield more than 5% in a year, the capital can grow; if they earn less, a bite is taken out of the capital.) Helen Haller joined the Board of Directors in 1981, and requested that part of its annual disbursement of funds go to GWIS for a fellowship; other Board members generously acquiesced, and thus began a pattern of giving that has continued to the present day. In the early years, the Board membership included members of the community (from New York City and western Connecticut), but for the past 15 years or so, the Board has been restricted to descendants of Mrs. Jenkins (or their spouses).

In contrast to each of the other fellowships described here, the Hartley Corporation makes annual contributions to GWIS, rather than there being an invested chunk of money, the income from which fundsthe fellowships. Therefore, the Hartley Corporation Fellowship is folded into the SDE Fellowships program. Helen and her family are proud to say that they have contributed $87,500 to GWIS fellowships between 1981 and 2019.
