honorary membership award

Recognizing outstanding women in science is at the heart of our organization. The Honorary Membership Award is the highest honor that GWIS bestows.

Honorary Members are held as role models for the younger members of the organization. They are asked to speak at GWIS National Meetings and are encouraged to become involved in chapter activities and in the national organization when possible.

Honorary Membership Awards recognize outstanding women scientists for achievement. Awards include the:

  • Florence R. Sabin Award for Research Excellence
  • Jean E. Simmons Award for Science Education Excellence
  • Bette E. Barnes Early Career Scientist Award

The Honorary Membership Committee solicits nominations from GWIS members which must be approved by the National Council and Grand Chapter (the governing bodies of the organization). Honorary Members do not pay dues and are listed on our website.
