Our members and supporters span local and virtual communities all over the world. On campuses, we foster the next generation of women in leadership and in the workplace.

 

After graduation, we mentor, connect and support educational and professional development. From college through career and beyond, we’re working to change the future of women in science across the globe.

WHO CAN JOIN?

Anyone with a baccalaureate degree, regardless of their gender, race, creed, age, sexual orientation, national origin, disability or class.

 

Many of our members hold masters and doctoral degrees, but our membership is open to anyone who holds a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution of higher learning who supports the mission of our organization.

 

In addition, absolutely anyone can become an affiliate member, whether or not he or she has obtained a baccalaureate degree. Affiliate members do not have voting rights but are otherwise invited to participate in all GWIS functions, activities, events, and conferences.

 

 

WHAT TYPE OF MEMBERSHIP IS AVAILABLE?

There are 2 membership types:

 

1. At large (formerly Omega) membership - If you do not live near a local chapter, become an at large member and connect through our website, members-only forums and publications!

 

2. Chapter membership - If you live close to one of our chapters we recommend you join GWIS with a chapter membership. This membership will allow you to take advantage of all the local activities hosted by the chapter PLUS enjoy all the benefits of the national membership.

 

Within each membership type you have the following options:

 

  • Regular - Professional, non-student members
  • Transitional - Reduced fees for Postdoctoral Associates and Regular Members facing financial uncertainty.
  • Graduate Student - Members who are registered for an advanced degree (Masters or PhD)
  • National Life Member - Regular members who have elected to pay life membership dues.
  • Affiliate - Non-voting member who support the GWIS organization but do not hold a baccalaureate or higher degree. This includes undergraduate students who are studying in a STEM field, and anyone who supports the mission of the organization.
  • Introductory - Fellowships applicants that are not already GWIS members may join with a 1-year introductory membership

 

 

HOW MUCH DOES MEMBERSHIP COST?

Tax Deductibility - GWIS is a 501(c)(3) charitable membership organization, most of your national dues are tax deductible on your personal federal income tax return.

 

 

 

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

As a member of national GWIS you will have the following benefits:

 

  • National GWIS fellowships and grants application fees are waived for members
  • GWIS awards several research fellowships each year. The application fees for these awards are waived for current members.
  • Receive bulletins three times a year - Features GWIS chapter news, a letter from the President, inspiring stories of women scientists, book reviews, articles about controversial current issues, photos of recent GWIS events, and fellowships winners’ recognitions.
  • Access to exclusive membership directory - Members will be able to connect with a network of over 1,000 like-minded scientists that span every scientific discipline as well as both academic and industry careers. The networking potential is limitless!
  • Develop your leadership skills by participating in one of our committees - All of our activities provide excellent opportunities for networking, allowing members the possibility to find mentors, mentees, potential new jobs, employees, and friends.
  • Serve as a delegate to the annual AAAS meeting - GWIS is a participating organization in the annual American Association for the Advancement of Science conference, sending delegates to at least 5 assemblies. Appointed representatives serve as voting members of the largest science organization in the United States.
  • Participate in the GWIS national conference - GWIS hosts an annual in-person meeting to facilitate interactions between all GWIS chapters. The meeting is hosted each year by a local chapter, and is a great opportunity to learn more about the organization, network and participate in professional development events
  • Engage in local chapter activities - Each chapter hosts a variety of activities for local member participation. Check out your local chapter page for more information on the activities in your area.
